The waterwheel was an early source of mechanical energy replacing that of humans and animals, and was first utilized for tasks such as raising water, fulling cloth, and grinding grain. This product of human ingenuity has been lauded for its stability, consistency, and efficiency.

Waterwheels have been common in western, central, and upstate NY. Rochester's High Falls neighborhood has featured a 25 foot, 20-ton waterwheel for many years.
